Typically, you can find Merino sheep in the Alps & Highlands of New Zealand and Australia \u2013 areas known for their extreme weather conditions. In summer, their light coat keeps them cool despite temperatures up to +35\u00b0C. Whilst in winter, when temperatures can go as low as -20\u00b0C, they grow an extra layer of wool which protects them against the cold. The most important step for keeping your kids warm during winter is to actually put a merino base layer directly on their skin. If it is very cold, you can also add a second, insulating layer in order to lock in the heat. But no need to put on multiple layers of cotton and synthetics \u2013 leaving your children little room for movement and play. Unlike regular wool, merino wool offers an exceptional level of comfort and will not irritate the skin. In contrast to synthetics, merino wool is an active fiber that reacts to changes in body temperatures. So it will keep your child warm when it\u2019s cold, and cool when it\u2019s warm. This means that they can wear their merino garments in any weather conditions and be sure to feel perfectly comfortable. For babies, this is ideal as they cannot express whether they are too cold or too warm. Merino wool draws moisture and sweat away from the skin, a phenomenon known as wicking. This will help your child stay comfortable whether it be in warm or cold conditions. You could say that it creates a \u2018responsive microclimate\u2019 around your child\u2019s body and \u2018wicks\u2019 away moisture so that your child\u2019s skin does not get clammy. Merino wool can absorb up to 1\/3 of its own weight in moisture before it starts to feel damp and clammy. When it comes to our children, safety is of high priority. As opposed to many synthetic fabrics, merino wool is naturally flame retardant, and does not melt when exposed to fire. Did you know that fire fighters wear wool uniforms? Merino is one of the softest types of wool available, because of finer fibers and smaller scales. A merino fiber can be bent and twisted more than 20\u2019000 times before it will break. More importantly, it has natural stretch, it does not need ironing and it is super durable. Merino contains lanolin, which has antibacterial properties, resulting in reduced human body odor. This means the garments can be worn for a considerable amount of time before it eventually needs washing.
